Australian authorities have started taking safety precautions for poultry farmers after confirming that H5N1 avian influenza has been found in migratory birds.

The Consultative Committee on Emergency Animal Diseases (CCEAD) has advised that states and territories should encourage farmers to keep free-range poultry indoors whenever possible. This strategy is intended to reduce the risk of the virus spreading from wild birds to commercial flocks. The CCEAD emphasized that this is a temporary measure, and they plan to review the situation in two weeks.

Currently, there are six confirmed cases of the H5N1 strain in migratory seabirds across New South Wales, Western Australia, and South Australia. The most recent case was a giant petrel found on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Although the CSIRO is still analyzing suspected cases in Western Australia, the Acting Australian Chief Veterinary Officer stated that there have been no mass deaths and the virus has not yet entered the farming sector.

Consequently, this could lead to many deaths if the virus spreads. Furthermore, since the virus can move from birds to mammals, public health officials recommend following strict hygiene rules and avoiding contact with dead wildlife to reduce health risks to humans.
