Large demonstrations took place across France on Saturday. These protests were caused by the murder of an 11-year-old girl and claims that the justice system failed to protect children.

The unrest began after the death of a young girl named Lyhanna, who disappeared in May. A 41-year-old suspect was arrested, but it was revealed that he had been accused of child rape twice before without any legal action being taken. Consequently, about 180 organizations organized protests in 110 cities, with around 100,000 people marching in Paris. These groups are calling for a new, complete set of laws to replace current fragmented rules, emphasizing a total approach that includes prevention, better court processes, and support for victims.

Anne-Cécile Mailfert, president of the Women’s Foundation, asserted that 94 percent of rape complaints are dismissed, and she emphasized that the system lacks enough resources. Furthermore, a 2022 government report showed that in 70 percent of child abuse cases, investigators did not check the suspects' electronic devices. Data from the Council of Europe also suggests that France has fewer professional judges per person than many other European countries, which makes it difficult to handle the workload.

In response, President Emmanuel Macron expressed concern that people are losing trust in state institutions. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin admitted there was a "huge failure" and ordered a review of 70,000 old child abuse cases by July 14. He also stated that senior judges and himself will not take any vacation until a full audit with chief prosecutors is finished.
