The accident happened on Friday where the Sankuru and Kasai rivers meet in the Kasai province. Francois Kabula, the administrator of the Ilebo territory, reported that 20 people died and 80 survived. However, an eyewitness named Tshikudi Jean claimed that the number of passengers was much higher, estimating that there were more than 200 people on board.

Regarding these failures, François Malepo, president of the Ilebo civil society organization, emphasized that boat operators often prioritize making money over the safety of their passengers.
