The FDNY sent two fire engines to put out the flames, which officials later explained were caused by the fireworks platforms rather than the bridge itself. They stated that such incidents are expected during large displays and confirmed that the 143-year-old bridge remained safe.

Across the East Coast, health officials issued a 'Code Purple' air quality alert in the capital and heat warnings, which meant that water had to be distributed to the crowds.
