Introduction

Several professional hockey prospects have shared their immediate athletic and academic goals following recent team development camps.

Main Body

Within the Calgary Flames organization, Cole Reschny has announced that he will stay with the University of North Dakota (UND) until the 2026-27 season. Reschny emphasized that his main goal is to win a national championship, as he believes he needs more physical and mental growth before turning professional. Similarly, Carson Carels, a top draft pick, has also chosen the UND program. Carels asserted that playing in college instead of signing a professional contract immediately will help improve his long-term career success. Because Reschny and Carels have already played together internationally, they are expected to continue their strong partnership in college and potentially in the future with the Flames.

Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks have added Jake Gustafson to their development system. During a recent prospect game, Gustafson showed his offensive skill by scoring the first goal of the event. Although he has been praised for his defensive play, he stated that he intends to improve his scoring ability during his time with the Portland Winterhawks. Furthermore, Gustafson's move to Colorado College will allow him to reunite with fellow prospect Colton Roberts, meaning both players will develop their skills at the same university.

Conclusion

These athletes are now moving from their team camps to their respective college and junior league assignments.

🚀 The 'Nuance' Jump: From Simple to Sophisticated

At the A2 level, you likely say "he said" or "he wants" for everything. To reach B2, you need to stop using 'generic' verbs and start using Reporting & Intent Verbs. These words don't just tell us what happened; they tell us the attitude of the speaker.

🔍 The Shift in the Text

Look at how the author describes the players. They don't just "say" things:

  • "Reschny emphasized..." \rightarrow (He didn't just speak; he showed that this point was the most important).
  • "Carels asserted..." \rightarrow (He didn't just say it; he stated it with strong confidence/authority).
  • "He stated that he intends..." \rightarrow (More formal than "he says he wants to").

🛠️ B2 Tool: The 'Intent' Scale

Instead of using "Want", try these based on the level of commitment:

  1. Intend to (Plan/Decision) \rightarrow "I intend to finish my degree by June."
  2. Aim to (Goal/Target) \rightarrow "I aim to reach B2 fluency this year."
  3. Aspire to (Dream/Ambition) \rightarrow "She aspires to lead the company one day."

💡 Pro Tip: The 'Connective' Glue

B2 speakers move away from And and But. Notice the professional transitions used here to link complex ideas:

"Furthermore..." \rightarrow Use this instead of "Also" when adding a supporting fact. "Similarly..." \rightarrow Use this instead of "Like him" to compare two different people's choices.

Quick Logic Check: If you say "I want to learn English," you sound like a student. If you say "I intend to master English; furthermore, I aspire to work abroad," you sound like a B2 professional.
