On June 24, 2026, Venezuela was hit by two earthquakes in a row. The second one reached a magnitude of 7.5, leading to the collapse of many buildings and a high number of deaths in the coastal region of La Guaira.

Furthermore, the United Nations estimates that about 50,000 people are still missing, while NASA satellite images show that nearly 59,000 buildings may have been destroyed, which is higher than the government's estimates.

Because the government did not provide heavy machinery immediately, civilian volunteers known as 'topos' (moles) began digging by hand to find survivors. These volunteers, mostly untrained workers, became the main rescue force in several areas. Meanwhile, international teams from Israel, Italy, Argentina, and Spain provided professional search-and-rescue support. However, these teams have mostly finished their missions because the chance of finding survivors decreased after twelve days.

Consequently, the government has started a reconstruction project called 'Venezuela Reborn.' Additionally, the region faces a humanitarian crisis as hospitals are struggling and the UN estimates economic damages at $6.7 billion, which is about six percent of the national GDP.
