The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is currently investigating a fatal incident involving two National Guard members and a 20-year-old man in Memphis.

The incident happened around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday. National Guard personnel, working as part of a federal task force to reduce crime, responded to reports of gunfire. According to the Memphis Police Department, the soldiers chased an armed man, identified as Tyrin Johnson, on foot. The police asserted that Mr. Johnson turned toward the soldiers with a weapon, which caused them to open fire. Although medical teams tried to save him at the scene, Mr. Johnson died from two gunshot wounds to the chest.

This deployment followed a directive from President Donald Trump to place federal agents and troops in cities described by the administration as having high crime rates, a move supported by Governor Bill Lee. Local Democratic officials previously challenged the legality of this action; however, the Tennessee Court of Appeals ruled in April that these officials could not stop the operation. While the Memphis Safe Task Force reports over 10,000 arrests, TBI data shows that at least four shootings involving officers have occurred in connection with the task force, resulting in three deaths.

Furthermore, the family of the victim, specifically Evaniel Johnson, has requested surveillance footage to check the official story, as they believe lethal force was not necessary since the man was retreating.
