The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has changed its leadership and started a full review after a government investigation discovered that donations from devotees were stolen.

The crisis began on June 7, 2026, after a political figure claimed that temple offerings were being misused. In response, the Uttar Pradesh government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT found that the trust failed to follow standard security procedures in the area where donations are counted. Specifically, the report stated that staff were not searched and security rules were ignored, which allowed employees to steal cash repeatedly. CCTV footage showed about 70 instances of staff hiding money. Consequently, eight contract workers were arrested, and police recovered nearly ₹79.85 lakh and several precious metals.

Because of these failures, the Trust accepted the resignations of General Secretary Champat Rai and Trustee Anil Mishra. The SIT emphasized that Dr. Mishra was responsible for the lack of supervision because he wrote the security rules but failed to enforce them. Meanwhile, Mr. Rai has remained silent, asserting that he will respond fully once the final report is released. The Trust's treasurer, Govind Dev Giri, admitted that the situation was embarrassing for the organization, although he defended Mr. Rai's past work.

Additionally, the SIT is investigating how gold and silver donations were handled. While the Trust claims that all 2,926 precious items are documented, investigators are looking into how jewelry was turned into gold bars in Bengaluru. To fix these problems and regain public trust, the Trust appointed Krishna Mohan as the temporary general secretary. Furthermore, they created a three-member panel of retired judges and military officers to choose a permanent Chief Executive Officer.

The Trust is now waiting for the SIT's final report on July 15 and is introducing new management rules to restore the public's confidence.
