A United States citizen has started a legal case against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He claims that federal agents targeted him because he criticized the leaders of these agencies.

The lawsuit was filed by David Streever, a resident of New York. Streever argues that federal authorities violated his First Amendment rights after he sent an email in January to the acting ICE Director, Todd Lyons. In the email, which was written after an ICE agent killed a woman in Minneapolis, Streever used very harsh language and compared the Director to a notorious Nazi official.

In June, while Streever was traveling in Finland, federal agents visited his home and left a warning. They stated that his email might have broken federal law and told him to stop this behavior. After he returned to the U.S., agents tried to stop him at a hotel in New York City, but hotel staff prevented them from doing so. Additionally, agents contacted him several times by phone.

Streever's lawyers, from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, emphasized that the five-month delay between the email and the agents' response proves there was no real threat. Instead, they assert that the government was trying to silence political speech. Meanwhile, a similar situation occurred with a poll worker named Paigelynne Gonyea. While she believes she was questioned for a social media post, a DHS spokesperson asserted that she committed a crime by sharing an officer's home address.
