French President Emmanuel Macron has made an official visit to Damascus to meet with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, marking a major change in the relationship between the two countries.

The two nations have agreed to start exchanging ambassadors again, ending a twelve-year break that began in 2012. This visit is particularly important because President Macron is the first European Union leader to visit Syria since the change of power in December 2024. This follows a previous visit by President al-Sharaa to France in May 2025, and it shows that Paris wants to lead Western efforts to work with the new Syrian government.

Furthermore, President Macron has emphasized the need for the European Union and the United States to remove most of the sanctions previously placed on the Syrian state to help the recovery process.
