The Ghanaian government has delayed a planned visit by President Cyril Ramaphosa. This decision follows several xenophobic attacks and the return of Ghanaian citizens from South Africa.

The state visit, which was supposed to happen in the first week of August, was postponed because of a tense atmosphere in Ghana. Ghana is not the only country affected; Nigeria, Malawi, and Kenya have also brought their citizens home after anti-foreigner protests in South Africa, where about 25,000 undocumented migrants were removed by the end of June.

Consequently, the South African Justice Minister claimed that Ghana shared incorrect data about illegal migration. Furthermore, there is a legal argument about residency status; Ghana maintains that most of its citizens had valid documents, whereas South Africa disagrees, although neither side has provided proof.

In response, Ghana asked the African Union for help in May, suggesting that these attacks violate the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement. While President Ramaphosa has emphasized the right to peaceful protest and promised to manage illegal migration, experts warn that South Africa could become politically isolated in Africa if it does not improve its diplomatic relations.
