Actor Matt Damon has explained the strict physical and dietary changes he had to make for his lead role in Christopher Nolan's new film, 'The Odyssey'.

Damon's physical transformation was based on a complete change in his lifestyle, which included removing gluten from his diet entirely. He emphasized that this decision followed medical advice and led to a significant weight loss, bringing him down to 167 pounds—a weight he had not reached since high school. This diet, combined with professional athletic training, was necessary to meet the director's request for a body that looked both lean and strong. While Damon has changed his weight for roles before, he noted that similar efforts for the 1996 film 'Courage Under Fire' had caused health risks for his heart.

The production took place in real locations across Iceland, Italy, and Western Sahara because the director preferred authentic settings over computer-generated imagery. Consequently, the crew suffered from a lack of sleep, often getting only five hours a night, and had to deal with extreme weather. Damon described the experience as an expedition, asserting that the cast shared these hardships to achieve the best cinematic results. His co-star, Zendaya, also mentioned the freezing temperatures they faced while filming in Iceland.
