The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced important changes to the sports program for the 2030 Winter Games. These updates include the removal of Nordic combined and the introduction of several new events.

The decision to remove Nordic combined is a major change, as the sport had been part of every Winter Olympics since 1924. The IOC explained that this decision was based on data showing a drop in popularity; the sport performed poorly in 11 out of 14 key areas during the most recent cycle. Furthermore, the IOC emphasized a lack of global diversity, noting that only five countries won medals in the last four Games. Consequently, low television viewership and a lack of international interest meant the sport could no longer be justified.

On the other hand, the IOC is focusing on modernizing the program to attract younger audiences. This strategy includes the introduction of 'synchro9' figure skating and freeride events for skiing and snowboarding. While the snowboard parallel giant slalom was almost removed, it will remain in the program because its popularity improved after the 2022 Beijing Games. Additionally, there will be more events in biathlon, speed skating, and ski jumping, and ski mountaineering will return with more competitions.

Critics also pointed out that this removal prevents the introduction of women's Nordic combined, which is a setback for gender equality. Despite this, the IOC stated that the sport could return for the 2034 Utah Games if it meets the necessary requirements for global engagement.
