Police in Virginia have successfully linked Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. to several violent crimes. These include the murders of Hannah Graham and Morgan Harrington, as well as the attempted murder of another woman.

Furthermore, DNA evidence connected him to a 2005 cold case involving a brutal attack in Fairfax. This forensic evidence also linked Matthew to the 2009 disappearance and murder of Morgan Harrington, whose body was found on a farm near the university.

However, the report emphasizes that there were serious institutional failures. Matthew had been accused of sexual misconduct at two different universities, but because these claims were not prosecuted, he was able to move between schools without any warnings. Consequently, officials failed to notice his pattern of dangerous behavior. In a separate matter, while Randy Taylor was originally convicted for the case of Alexis Murphy, later DNA tests confirmed that Matthew was not involved in that specific crime.

Later, in March 2016, he pleaded guilty to the first-degree murders of Graham and Harrington. In exchange for this plea, the state decided not to seek the death penalty. Instead, Matthew was sentenced to four consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole.
