Meta Platforms has announced that it will build its first Canadian data center in Alberta. At the same time, the company is planning to start a public cloud business to better manage the high costs of its artificial intelligence investments.

Meta will invest approximately C$13 billion to build a 1-gigawatt facility in Sturgeon County, Alberta. Meta chose Alberta because the province has plenty of natural gas, a helpful regulatory environment, and a cool climate that reduces the cost of cooling its computers. Furthermore, to avoid putting pressure on the local power grid, Meta will fund its own energy infrastructure and use a special cooling system that does not require external water.

However, analysts are divided on this strategy. Some believe it will create significant new revenue, whereas others warn that it will be difficult to compete with established leaders like AWS and Azure.
