Finding and Mapping the Quest Shipwreck in the Labrador Sea

Introduction

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society has completed the first manned mission to the wreck of the Quest since the ship sank in 1962.

Main Body

The expedition was led by CEO John Geiger, who used the DSV Alvin submersible to find the vessel about 80 kilometers off the coast of Labrador at a depth of 390 meters. This mission is the first part of the 'Heroic Age Expedition.' The team is using advanced underwater technology from Voyis to create a detailed 3D digital model for the public. The Quest was a steamship used by Sir Ernest Shackleton for Arctic exploration. It is historically significant because Shackleton died of a heart attack on board in 1922, an event that many historians believe ended the 'heroic age' of Antarctic exploration. After this, the ship was used for sealing in the Newfoundland and Labrador areas.

When the team observed the hull, they found that the ship was badly damaged from when it first hit the seabed, with many holes in the decking. Although the wreck now provides a home for various marine species, the team found old fishing nets covering the structure. Consequently, Geiger emphasized that current ocean conservation efforts are not strong enough. Furthermore, the project will now move toward the waters off Greenland to survey the Terra Nova. This ship was used by Robert Falcon Scott in 1910 and was discovered in 2012. Like the Quest, it was also used as a sealing vessel in St. John's, Newfoundland, before it sank.

Conclusion

The expedition has successfully captured images of the Quest and is now shifting its focus to the survey of the Terra Nova.

⚡ The 'Glue' of B2: Logical Connectors

At the A2 level, you usually write short, simple sentences. To reach B2, you need to stop using and and but for everything. You need Logical Connectors. These are words that act like glue, sticking two ideas together to show a relationship (cause, addition, or contrast).

🛠️ From Simple to Sophisticated

Look at how the text transforms basic ideas into B2-level academic English:

  • The 'Result' Glue: Instead of saying "The nets were there, so he said conservation is bad," the author uses Consequently.
    • B2 Pattern: [Fact] \rightarrow Consequently, \rightarrow [Result]
  • The 'Extra' Glue: Instead of saying "Also, the project is moving to Greenland," the author uses Furthermore. This tells the reader: "I have already given you one important point; now here is an even more important one."
    • B2 Pattern: [Point 1] \rightarrow Furthermore, \rightarrow [Point 2]
  • The 'Surprise' Glue: Instead of "But the wreck is a home for fish," the author uses Although. This allows you to put two opposite ideas in one sentence.
    • B2 Pattern: Although [Opposite Fact], [Main Point].
