A five-year-old southern elephant seal named Neil has returned to the ocean after spending several weeks at Seven Mile Beach near Hobart.

Neil's presence in southern Tasmania is unusual because he was born on the Tasman Peninsula in 2020. Due to a natural instinct to return to the place where they were born, the seal returns to this area twice a year to rest and shed his skin. This behavior has led to several incidents where the seal damaged local infrastructure, such as fences and bollards.

Experts suggest that people are drawn to the seal because of its cute, baby-like features and a tendency to treat the animal as if it were human. Consequently, some businesses and politicians have used the seal's popularity for advertising and social media content.

To manage the risks, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) introduced a traffic plan and hired 24/7 security to keep the public at least 20 meters away from the animal. Wildlife experts warned that too much human attention can be dangerous. They noted that in other regions, seals have been put down for public safety. While the NRE stated that this is a last resort, they emphasized that people must follow distance rules as the seal grows larger.
