Dame Sarah Storey, the most successful Paralympian to represent Great Britain, has announced that she is retiring from international sport immediately.

At 48 years old, Storey has decided to end her competitive career, which means she will not compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Her athletic journey lasted thirty-five years and showed great versatility. She began as a swimmer, winning sixteen medals, including five gold, over four Paralympic Games. However, due to ear infections in 2005, she switched to cycling. From the 2008 Beijing Games to the 2024 Paris Games, she won fourteen gold medals. Furthermore, she continued to achieve success after becoming a mother, winning eight titles after the births of her children in 2013 and 2017.

Storey's decision is based on her belief that the development of Para-sport has slowed down. She emphasized that the time between Paralympic Games has not been used effectively to keep the sport moving forward. Consequently, she asserts that she can create more positive change through leadership and advocacy roles than by winning more medals. Lord Coe supported her views, acknowledging that her concerns about the need for steady progress are very important.
