Public health officials are currently tracking a large increase in cyclosporiasis cases across the United States, with a particularly strong rise seen in the Midwest region.

The current trend shows a significant increase in infections caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite. Although the CDC reported 145 cases across 17 states in mid-June, officials emphasize that this number is likely much lower than the actual total due to delays in reporting and testing limits. Historically, outbreaks with more than 1,000 cases are rare, though similar events occurred with raspberries from Guatemala in 1997 and basil from Mexico in 2019.

Experts assert that the infection spreads when people eat contaminated fresh produce or drink contaminated water, often caused by irrigation systems polluted with feces. Because the parasite must mature outside the body, it is unlikely to spread directly from person to person. However, finding the exact source of the outbreak is difficult because the parasite cannot be grown in a laboratory and supply chains are very complex. Consequently, the specific contaminated product has not yet been identified. To reduce risk, health officials recommend buying whole lettuce instead of pre-washed bagged salads and cooking vegetables when possible.

While this is the main recommended treatment for long-term stomach distress, doctors note that the medicine can sometimes cause diarrhea as a side effect. Furthermore, the CDC indicates that there are few effective alternatives for patients who are allergic to this medication. Common symptoms of the infection include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and tiredness, which usually appear one week after exposure.
