The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued official warnings to autonomous vehicle (AV) developers. The agency is concerned about vehicles blocking emergency services, even as it reduces the requirements for traditional vehicle hardware.

In one serious case in Austin, a vehicle delayed an ambulance during a major emergency. Consequently, local officials have argued that this technology was released to the public too early and on too large a scale.

They argue that these parts are not necessary for vehicles designed to drive themselves. This change follows requests from the industry for more design flexibility and shows the government's goal to integrate AV technology into public roads more quickly.
