Police in regional Victoria are investigating the discovery of human remains, which they believe belong to a missing 13-year-old girl.

The events began on July 4, when Layla Jeffery was last seen on McCracken Avenue in the town of Donald. After a relative reported her missing on July 5, authorities started a large search operation. This effort included the Victoria Police missing persons squad, search dogs, helicopters, and State Emergency Service staff. The search focused on the bushland west of Byrne Street, near the Richardson River.

On Thursday afternoon, human remains were found in that area. Although the police are still waiting for formal identification, investigators emphasized that it is very likely the remains belong to the missing teenager. Consequently, the death is being treated as suspicious. On Friday morning, police carried out a search warrant at a house in Donald to gather more evidence.

Regarding the suspects and witnesses, Victoria Police confirmed they have arrested a 16-year-old male from the Swan Hill region, who is currently being questioned. Furthermore, two women, aged 53 and 55, are helping with the investigation. Local leaders have also noted that the heavy police presence has had a strong emotional impact on the local community.
