The United States Department of Defense has started a major effort to tighten the rules regarding grooming, physical fitness, and appearance for all military personnel.

This policy change is led by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who believes that relaxed appearance standards show a decline in military discipline and readiness. To fix this, he has introduced directives to restore a 'warrior ethos' and a 'culture of excellence.' A key part of this plan is the reduction of shaving waivers. Under the new rules, medical excuses for facial hair are limited to 90-day periods, with a maximum total of 12 months. Consequently, personnel who cannot follow the clean-shaven rules after one year of treatment may be removed from service or sent to the Disability Evaluation System.

The administration emphasizes that these standards are a matter of national security, asserting that facial hair prevents protective masks and respirators from working correctly. On the other hand, critics argue that these rules unfairly affect Black service members, who are more likely to suffer from skin conditions caused by shaving. Although data from 2016 suggested that different equipment could solve this problem, the current leadership has decided to prioritize uniformity and strict rules.

He has also expanded his focus to include changes to religious affiliation codes and tattoo policies, claiming these adjustments are necessary to maintain professional standards across all ranks.
