Public health officials are currently investigating a large increase in cyclosporiasis cases across 31 U.S. states, with Michigan identified as the main center of the outbreak.

Cyclosporiasis usually happens every year between May and August because people eat fresh produce. While outbreaks in 2018 and 2019 had more total cases, the current outbreak is growing faster. The parasite is usually spread through produce contaminated by dirty water or waste. Identifying the exact food source is difficult because the illness takes up to two weeks to appear, meaning patients often forget what they ate. Furthermore, while there are unconfirmed reports that some Taco Bell locations stopped serving lettuce, no official link has been proven, and other companies like Chipotle and Wendy's report no problems.

Consequently, health officials recommend washing produce thoroughly and avoiding raw greens, even though washing is not always effective because the parasite sticks to the food.
