German security agencies are investigating a fire that stopped train services on a main route between Dusseldorf and Cologne, after a left-wing extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident began on Friday morning when fires broke out at two different locations between Langenfeld and Leverkusen. Security sources believe this claim is credible because the group has a history of similar attacks, including a disruption of the Dusseldorf-Duisburg line last year and a failed attempt to attack a power station in January.

Meanwhile, the state security unit of the Cologne police has taken over the criminal investigation. Herbert Reul, the interior minister for North Rhine-Westphalia, emphasized that this act was an attempt to use violence instead of political discussion. He also noted that the decentralized structure of the group makes it difficult for police to catch the perpetrators.
