International Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide Anniversary

Introduction

The international community, including officials from Türkiye and Canada, has observed the anniversary of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide through official ceremonies and diplomatic messages.

Main Body

The events began on July 11, 1995, when Bosnian Serb forces led by Ratko Mladic captured Srebrenica. After the city fell, Bosniak civilians who had looked for safety at a United Nations base were handed over to the Serb forces. This led to the systematic killing of 8,372 Bosniak men and boys, whose bodies were later hidden in mass graves. Consequently, the International Court of Justice officially classified these events as genocide in 2007, based on evidence from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

In terms of current responses, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Türkiye released a message remembering the victims and their families. At the same time, the Canadian government emphasized that those responsible must be held accountable and that reconciliation is necessary. Furthermore, Canada expressed its support for the sovereignty and multiethnic nature of Bosnia and Herzegovina. To support this, Canada participates in the Peace Implementation Council Steering Board to ensure the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement is fully carried out. These activities coincide with the third International Day of Reflection and Commemoration, which was established by a UN General Assembly resolution in May 2024.

Conclusion

Commemorative events continue as identified remains are buried at the Potocari Memorial Cemetery, while international leaders remain focused on regional stability and legal justice.

⚡ The 'Logic Bridge': Moving from Simple Sentences to B2 Flow

At the A2 level, you likely write like this: The city fell. People were killed. The court called it genocide.

To reach B2, you must stop using 'period-stop-period' and start using Logical Connectors. These are the 'glue' words that show how one idea leads to another. Look at these three patterns found in the text:

1. The Result Linker: Consequently

Instead of saying "So," B2 speakers use Consequently to show a formal result.

  • A2: The city fell, so people died.
  • B2: The city fell; consequently, thousands of civilians were killed.

2. The Addition Linker: Furthermore

When you have more than one point, don't just say "And... and..." Use Furthermore to add a stronger, more professional point.

  • Example from text: Canada wants accountability... Furthermore, Canada expressed support for sovereignty.

3. The 'Same Time' Linker: Coincide with

This is a high-level phrase. Instead of saying "This happens at the same time as," use coincide with to describe two events happening simultaneously.

  • B2 Upgrade: These activities coincide with the third International Day of Reflection.

💡 Quick Tip for the Transition: Next time you write, find two short sentences and try to replace the period with one of these: Consequently \rightarrow Furthermore \rightarrow Coincide with.
