While Poland demands that Ukraine recognize the UPA's crimes before the two nations can reconcile, the Ukrainian government views the OUN and UPA as symbols of national liberation. This conflict grew worse when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named a military unit after UPA figures. Consequently, President Nawrocki took back Zelenskyy's Order of the White Eagle, and Ukrainian officials responded by returning their own decorations. Furthermore, the Law and Justice (PiS) party suggested that Ukraine's entry into the European Union should depend on stopping the glorification of these wartime figures.
