The Nigerian military has launched several targeted operations, resulting in the death of many fighters linked to banditry and Islamist insurgencies.

In the north-western state of Zamfara, government forces and local volunteers carried out a two-day operation in the Gummi district. Information Commissioner Mahmud Muhammad Dantawasa stated that this action killed over 300 people associated with kidnapping and cattle theft gangs. These groups, which consist of both criminals and jihadists, have long destabilized rural areas by stealing livestock and kidnapping civilians for ransom. This success follows a failed attempt two weeks earlier, when security forces had to retreat because they were outnumbered.

These strikes were based on intelligence and surveillance missions, which also led to the seizure of homemade bombs and large amounts of weapons. This is part of a wider strategy to stop Boko Haram, a group that has operated since the early 2000s and expanded its attacks into Cameroon, Chad, and Niger since 2015.
