The Syrian People's Assembly held its first meeting in Damascus on Sunday. This event marks the official move toward a formal government system after the removal of Bashar al-Assad's administration in December 2024.

The legislative body has 210 seats. To fill these, 140 members were chosen through local electoral colleges, while President Ahmad al-Sharaa appointed the other 70. This temporary system was used because of practical problems, such as damaged population records caused by the long conflict. During the meeting, 206 members attended. Three representatives from Suwayda province were missing due to security issues caused by Hikmat al-Hijri's militia. To solve this, President al-Sharaa used his power to appoint Laith al-Balous and Subh al-Baddah to ensure the province was still represented.

Regarding leadership, the assembly voted to elect Abdul Hamid Aqil al-Awak as Speaker. Al-Awak, a former professor and legal expert who helped write the temporary constitutional declaration, won with 99 votes. The main goal of the Assembly is to write a new constitution and create democratic systems to replace the old authoritarian government.

Both international and local leaders view this as a vital moment for rebuilding the state. For example, the Turkish Foreign Ministry described the assembly as a way to bring stability and power back to the people. Furthermore, the United Nations called the session a major step in the political transition. President al-Sharaa emphasized that the government must focus on improving the economy, enhancing public services, and attracting foreign investment to fix the country's financial crisis.

The People's Assembly has begun its work by appointing a speaker and swearing in its members, starting the official process of writing a new constitution.
