A speedboat carrying Indian tourists overturned near Hon May Rut Ngoai island in southern Vietnam, leading to fifteen deaths and the rescue of twenty-one people.

The accident happened on Saturday afternoon. The boat, operated by the Ocean Pearl Island Company, was carrying 32 Indian citizens and four crew members. These passengers were part of a corporate trip organized by Lava Mobiles for their top business partners. According to the Indian Embassy, the victims included thirteen men and two women from the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.

There are different opinions regarding why the boat sank. Some survivors claimed that the boat overturned quickly because of high waves and too many passengers. However, Vietnamese authorities stated that the accident was caused by sudden and extreme weather changes. Witnesses also mentioned that some passengers were not wearing life jackets, while others were trapped inside the boat, which made rescue efforts more difficult. Additionally, one survivor suggested that a lack of medical facilities on the island may have prevented more lives from being saved.

In response, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung ordered a formal investigation and a full review of maritime safety rules in the area. As a result, the 57-year-old captain, Nguyen Hong Hai, was arrested for legal violations. Furthermore, speedboat services in the An Thoi Archipelago were temporarily stopped. The Indian Embassy in Hanoi is now working with Vietnamese officials to return the bodies of the deceased to India and provide medical care for one critically injured survivor.
