The Hong Kong government has started a new policy that allows dogs in specific restaurants, ending a ban that lasted for several decades.

香港政府開始實施一項新政策，允許犬隻進入特定餐廳，結束了持續數十年的禁令。

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has assigned a team of 90 staff members to manage the first stage of this change, which involves more than 940 restaurants. In the first four days, the team carried out about 2,300 inspections, including 400 visits to unlicensed places. The FEHD emphasized that most businesses are following the rules, as they received only 20 complaints, mostly about the length of dog leashes and where pets were sitting.

For the first month, the government is focusing on a period of adjustment. Consequently, officials are providing guidance and verbal warnings instead of punishments to help owners and the public adapt. However, the FEHD asserted that any serious problems regarding food safety or hygiene will lead to immediate legal action.

Business owners have had different reactions to the new rules. Some managers decided to leave the program temporarily to improve their staffing and space layout. In contrast, other operators, such as the owners of Wan Land and Wan Land Mori cafés, report that the policy is attracting more customers and expect their revenue to grow by five to ten percent. The FEHD plans to open a new application window in about six months, possibly with some changes to the rules to ensure everything runs smoothly.
