Major chip manufacturers in Taiwan and South Korea are increasing their investments in infrastructure to meet the growing need for artificial intelligence (AI) hardware.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) reported a significant increase in financial performance for the first half of 2026. Revenues reached approximately $74.99 billion, which is a 35.6% increase compared to the previous year. This growth was caused by the continuous demand for advanced processors from companies like Nvidia, Apple, and AMD. To prevent potential supply shortages, TSMC has set aside nearly $56 billion for capital spending, focusing on expanding its factories and packaging plants in both the United States and Taiwan.

At the same time, the South Korean semiconductor industry is expanding with government support. Samsung Electronics announced that it will start operations at its Yongin site sooner, moving the target date to 2029. This decision was made because there is a huge demand for AI memory chips. Furthermore, this plan follows President Lee Jae Myung's goal to reduce economic differences between regions. Consequently, Samsung and SK Hynix are investing heavily in domestic production, as the government aims to double memory-chip capacity within five years.
