A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is currently investigating claims of financial mismanagement and the theft of donations from devotees at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was created in February 2020 to operate independently. However, critics argue that a lack of clear administrative rules allowed a few officials, specifically Champat Rai and Anil Mishra, to hold too much power. Furthermore, it is alleged that the Trust ignored professional hiring standards and instead appointed personal associates to important positions.

Serious operational failures appeared after an agreement with the State Bank of India in February 2025. The SIT report emphasizes that security measures were weakened, such as stopping mandatory security checks and ignoring dress codes. Consequently, these gaps allowed people to steal cash before it was officially recorded in bank accounts. As a result, eight individuals have been detained after police found stolen money in their homes and identified seventy thefts on CCTV footage.

In response, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) asserted that strict accountability is necessary to maintain the trust of the devotees. While the SIT confirmed that the Trust's official bank records are correct, the investigation is now focusing on how cash was handled and who was responsible for supervising the counting areas.

The investigation is still continuing, and the SIT is expected to give a final report to the Uttar Pradesh government within two weeks to determine legal and administrative responsibility.
