The Turkish government has emphasized a clear link between producing its own defense equipment and achieving strategic independence. Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz asserted that relying on foreign military purchases prevents a country from making fully independent decisions. Furthermore, the sector has become the 11th largest defense exporter in the world, with annual exports exceeding $11 billion. Alongside these industrial goals, the state is holding major events to remember the July 15, 2016, coup attempt organized by the FETO group. Records show that the attempt resulted in 253 deaths and involved about 9,000 personnel using aircraft and armored vehicles. However, the coup was stopped through public protests and the actions of loyal security forces. Over the last decade, the state has introduced systemic reforms to ensure that the military remains under civilian control and follows democratic leadership.
