The Hungarian legislature has passed a constitutional amendment intended to remove President Tamás Sulyok and introduce political reforms to replace the previous administration's system.

The amendment was passed thanks to the Tisza party's two-thirds majority, which they won in the April elections. With 139 votes in favor and six against, the law seeks to remove President Tamás Sulyok and Péter Polt, the head of the Constitutional Court. Prime Minister Péter Magyar emphasized that removing the President fulfills a campaign promise, asserting that President Sulyok failed to stop undemocratic actions under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Consequently, if the President does not sign the amendment within five days, the government has stated it will start impeachment proceedings.

Furthermore, the amendment introduces major institutional changes. These include creating an office to investigate financial problems from the Orbán era, removing Constitutional Court judges aged 70 or older, and setting a 12-year term limit for lawmakers. Because of this limit, Fidesz leader Gergely Gulyás has resigned since he can no longer run for office. While the current government describes these steps as a way to restore the rule of law, the Fidesz party has claimed they are an attack on democracy and an act of tyranny.

This political conflict shows a reversal of the 'winner-takes-all' system created by Viktor Orbán in 2011. The current administration has already closed several Orbán-era organizations, such as the Sovereignty Protection Office and public news services, which Prime Minister Magyar described as propaganda tools. Although Fidesz has organized protests, former Prime Minister Orbán has mostly stayed away from domestic politics while traveling in the United States.
