The province of Alberta has officially moved to a regulated private online gambling market. This means that licensed companies are now allowed to offer sports betting and casino services to people living in the province.

This new system was created following laws passed by Premier Danielle Smith's government. The government emphasized that this shift is designed to reduce the risks of unregulated gambling by introducing consumer protections, such as mandatory betting limits and digital self-exclusion tools.

The market is seen as attractive because Alberta has over four million people and several major professional sports teams.

Minister Dale Nally asserted that this may be due to better public awareness rather than the market opening itself. However, experts from the University of Lethbridge argued that the economic benefits might be low because most operators are international companies, meaning less money stays within the local economy.
