Analysis of Infrastructure and Design Changes in Washington, D.C.
Introduction
President Donald Trump has started several large construction and renovation projects across the U.S. capital, changing both the White House grounds and various national landmarks.
Main Body
The administration's main plan focuses on building a 90,000-square-foot ballroom, which requires tearing down the White House East Wing. Although the executive branch first claimed that private donations of $400 million would pay for the project, later requests for $1 billion in security funding from Congress have caused political tension. Furthermore, a report by Public Citizen suggests a conflict of interest, noting that more than half of the donors received larger federal contracts after the project began. While the National Trust for Historic Preservation has filed legal challenges, a federal appeals court recently allowed underground work to continue.
At the same time, the administration has completed several public works projects. For example, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was resurfaced with a color called 'American flag blue.' However, there are disagreements regarding the cost; the president stated it cost about $2 million, whereas federal records show contracts totaling approximately $14.8 million. Additionally, the administration wants to build a 250-foot arch on the Potomac River and restore fountains in Lafayette Park and Meridian Hill Park. These projects have used 'no-bid' contracts, which has led to criticism from Congress due to high costs.
Other changes include turning the Rose Garden into a paved patio and creating a 'Presidential Walk of Fame.' The administration also managed the rebranding of the Kennedy Center, though this was briefly stopped by a court ruling. Most recently, a temporary UFC arena was built on the South Lawn for a June 14 event. The president mentioned that this could become a permanent building, comparing it to how the Eiffel Tower became a permanent landmark.
Conclusion
Washington, D.C. is currently defined by constant construction and serious legal and political arguments regarding the permission and funding of these projects.

🌉 The Jump: From 'And' to 'Contrast Connectors'
At an A2 level, you usually connect ideas with simple words like and, but, or so. To reach B2, you must stop using 'but' for everything. You need to show the reader how two ideas disagree.
Look at these three power-moves from the text:
1. The "Even Though" Shift (Although / While)
Instead of saying: "The project is expensive, but they are doing it," the text uses:
"Although the executive branch first claimed... requests for $1 billion... have caused political tension."
The B2 Secret: Place Although or While at the start of the sentence to create a complex structure. It tells the reader: "I am about to give you two opposite facts in one breath."
2. The "Adding Weight" Move (Furthermore / Additionally)
A2 students say "And also..." B2 speakers use formal transitions to build an argument:
- Furthermore: Use this when the second point is more important or more shocking than the first.
- Additionally: Use this when you are simply adding more items to a list.
3. The "Direct Clash" (Whereas)
This is the gold standard for B2 comparisons. Look at this sentence:
"...the president stated it cost about 14.8 million."
Why this works: Whereas acts like a mirror. It puts two different facts side-by-side to highlight a contradiction. It is much more sophisticated than saying "but records show..."
