The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has helped arrange a temporary stop to fighting near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) so that essential electrical repairs can be made.

The ZNPP is currently in a dangerous situation because its external power supply is failing. After the main 750 kV Dniprovska line was disconnected over two months ago, the plant had to rely on a single backup line. Consequently, the facility has lost external power eighteen times since the conflict began, forcing engineers to use emergency diesel generators to keep the six shut-down reactors cool. This instability increased recently after attacks on electrical substations across the Dnipro River damaged the backup line.

This agreement allows teams to remove mines and repair the 750 kV line. However, the work is difficult because the power pylons are located right on the front line. The IAEA reported a 'serious incident' during the mine-clearing process that injured Russian soldiers. While Ukraine stated it will continue to follow the ceasefire, the IAEA emphasized that both sides must show maximum restraint to ensure power stability is restored.

Furthermore, Russia has indicated it will increase its air defenses to counter Ukrainian drones, which shows that the security environment around the nuclear plant remains very unstable.
