This happened because the police used unfair 'honey trap' tactics to trick him. The case was not solved until 2002, when new DNA technology linked the crime to Robert Napper, a criminal already in a psychiatric hospital. Napper was finally convicted of the murder in 2008.

After the first court case failed, Andre Hanscombe and his son moved to the countryside in France to find privacy and distance themselves from the tragedy. During this time, Andre dealt with hidden childhood trauma, and Alexander eventually remembered the attack and described what the killer had done. Later, Alexander explored different careers in mechanics, music, and hypnotherapy, and he published a memoir in 2015 called 'Letting Go.'

Furthermore, he stated that he has forgiven Napper after learning about the killer's own history of family violence and abuse.
