United States agricultural and health officials have started emergency actions after finding the New World screwworm in Texas. This is the first time the parasite has been found in the U.S. since 1966.

The parasite was discovered in a young calf in La Pryor, Texas, about 48 kilometers from the Mexican border. In response, the Department of Agriculture (USDA) created a 20-kilometer containment zone. To stop the parasite, officials are using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), which involves releasing sterile flies to stop the insects from breeding. However, there is a major problem: the US and Mexico can only produce 100 million sterile flies per week, but 600 million are needed to be effective.

Records show that the parasite was mostly gone from North and Central America by the mid-2000s. However, it returned to Panama in 2022 and spread through Central America and Mexico by 2024. Some officials believe this happened because of weak border security and the illegal movement of livestock, while others suggest that climate change is creating more suitable habitats for the parasite. Although the CDC has reported 2,070 human cases in the region, the risk to people is still considered low.

There is significant disagreement between different government levels. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and other politicians have criticized the federal response, calling it too slow and bureaucratic. On the other hand, Secretary Brooke Rollins emphasized that there is no evidence that the pest will stay permanently. Furthermore, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has put temporary limits on livestock imports from the affected areas to prevent the parasite from entering Canada.
