This incident is part of a larger conflict that began in May 2023, resulting in over 250 deaths and the displacement of 60,000 people. Although a multi-community government was formed in February and security officials have met to improve readiness, the region remains at risk of sudden attacks and hostage crises. Consequently, this reflects a continuing failure to reach a lasting peace between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo populations.
