Government authorities are currently dealing with widespread illegal construction in river flood zones and the unauthorized release of untreated waste into city drainage systems in the Pune area.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) led an investigation into illegal buildings in Moi Phata and Chikhali. These buildings block the natural flow of water and increase the risk of local flooding. This follows the previous demolition of 65 bungalows in the same area, showing a continuing trend of illegal development in protected river zones.

Although ₹40 crore has been set aside, the PMRDA emphasized that they currently lack financial support from the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD). Consequently, the authority has started temporary measures, such as using floating aerators and removing water weeds, which should be finished within a year.

This practice has damaged the drainage system and contaminated nearby farmland. In response, the MIDC and the Pollution Control Board have started taking legal action against those responsible.
