A doctor from the United States has been released from the Charité hospital in Berlin after recovering from a rare type of Ebola virus that he contracted while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The patient, Dr. Peter Stafford, is a surgeon with the nonprofit organization Serge. He was admitted to a special isolation unit on May 20, 2026, after tests confirmed he had the Bundibugyo variant of Ebola. He likely caught the virus while performing surgeries at Nyankunde Hospital. Doctors treated him with a combination of general supportive care and experimental antiviral drugs. Consequently, his viral levels dropped and his health improved. After remaining symptom-free for 72 hours and receiving negative test results, he was allowed to leave. His wife and four children also spent 21 days in quarantine, but they showed no symptoms and were released at the same time.

However, the general health situation in Central Africa remains dangerous. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an international emergency because there are no approved vaccines or treatments for this specific strain. In the DRC, there are 488 confirmed cases and 86 deaths, while Uganda has reported 19 cases and two deaths. Containment efforts are struggling because of poor contact tracing, laboratory delays, and violence from armed groups. Furthermore, some local communities distrust the health workers, which has led to attacks on burial teams.

Some experts, including former CDC Director Tom Frieden, have criticized the decline of U.S. global health capabilities. He asserted that the CDC has lost too many experienced staff and lacks stable leadership. He emphasized that the U.S. decision to leave the WHO and cancel important surveillance contracts may weaken the international response. While the U.S. government says it wants to protect public health and help the DRC, critics argue that the only way to stop the outbreak is to immediately send more technical support and logistics to the region.
