A seasonal mountaineering ranger has died after falling into a crevasse on Mount McKinley.

The victim has been identified as Robin Pendery, a resident of Enumclaw, Washington, and a seasonal employee of the Denali National Park and Preserve. On Thursday, at around 2:00 p.m. local time, Pendery began a climbing patrol near the 14,000-foot camp, where she was responsible for supervising operations. Although National Park Service (NPS) staff started rescue efforts immediately, the fall was fatal. Officials emphasized that the exact cause of the accident is still being investigated. According to the National Weather Service, the weather was cloudy with temperatures of 67 degrees Fahrenheit and light winds, though significant snow had fallen at the 11,200-foot level.

Regarding her professional background, Pendery had extensive experience in high-altitude work. Since 2015, she had worked as a mountain guide, ski patroller, and avalanche forecaster, while also working as an emergency room nurse in Seattle. She joined the NPS in 2024, focusing on climber safety and emergency response.

This tragedy follows another fatal incident involving a Latvian expedition one week earlier, where three people died and a fourth had to be rescued by a helicopter from a high basin. Mount McKinley, which stands at 20,310 feet, is known for its extreme dangers, and records show more than 130 deaths on the mountain. Furthermore, the name of the peak was recently changed back to Mount McKinley by a 2025 executive order, following a previous change to Denali in 2015.
