Pope Leo XIV has started a week-long official visit to Spain. He will travel to Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands to meet with political leaders and address humanitarian issues.

The Pope's schedule includes several important diplomatic and religious events. On June 8, Pope Leo will make history as the first pontiff to speak to the Spanish parliament and meet with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Both leaders share an opposition to the conflict in Iran; however, this position has caused tension with U.S. President Donald Trump. President Trump has criticized the Pope's foreign policy, while Prime Minister Sánchez has faced threats of trade sanctions and possible suspension from NATO because he limited U.S. military access to Spanish bases.

In Barcelona, the Pope will bless the Tower of Jesus Christ at the Sagrada Familia to mark 100 years since the death of Antoni Gaudí. The Pope also addressed the crisis of clerical sexual abuse, describing it as an 'open wound,' and plans to meet with victims. Furthermore, he noted a change in Spanish Catholicism; while the percentage of Catholics dropped from 90% in the 1970s to about 55% in 2025, there has been a reported increase in conversions among young people aged 15 to 29.

The final part of the trip takes place in the Canary Islands, specifically Gran Canaria and Tenerife. This visit fulfills a wish made by the late Pope Francis, who wanted to see the migration crisis before he died in April 2025. By visiting refugee centers and the port of Arguineguín, Pope Leo wants to highlight the difficult conditions of migrants from West Africa. This visit happens as the Spanish government recently decided to legalize approximately 500,000 undocumented migrants to help them join the workforce.
