The Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, is currently facing internal worker strikes and external protests following claims of serious medical and nutritional neglect.

One serious medical case involves Elder Guerra, a Guatemalan national, who suffered a brain injury after a fall in mid-May. Reports state that although he was hospitalized, Guerra's health has worsened in a medical isolation cell, where he suffers from dizziness and hearing loss.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has described the detainees as high-risk criminals; however, a study by Professor Austin Kocher from Syracuse University shows that 88% of detainees had no criminal convictions as of mid-March. While the GEO Group denies any wrongdoing and emphasizes that they provide full support services, detainees claim they are being punished through threats of transfer and illegal surveillance.

The situation became even more tense during a May 24 visit by lawmakers, when security guards used pepper spray against protesters, including a U.S. Senator.
