Search Operations End for Missing Persons in Xaysomboun Province Cave

塞宋奔省山洞失蹤人員搜救行動結束

Introduction

International and local rescue teams have stopped the active search for two people who remain trapped in a partially flooded cave in central Laos.

國際與當地救援隊已停止在寮國中部一個部分被淹的山洞中,對兩名失蹤人員進行積極搜救。

Main Body

The incident began on May 20, when seven people searching for gold and hunting became trapped after flash floods blocked the exit. Rescue operations successfully saved five people; one was rescued by divers on May 29, and four others were guided to safety on May 30 after water was pumped out. These survivors were found about 300 meters from the entrance, although the two missing persons had entered the cave on their own.

事件始於 5 月 20 日,當時有七人因尋金與狩獵而受困,原因是山洪爆發堵住了出口。救援行動成功救出五人;其中一人於 5 月 29 日由潛水員救出,另外四人則在 5 月 30 日將水抽乾後被指引安全撤離。這些倖存者在距離入口約 300 公尺處被發現,不過兩名失蹤人員是自行進入山洞的。

Rescue experts have now decided to move from active rescue to passive support. Malaysian specialist Lee Kian Lie described the mission as an extremely dangerous operation due to poor air quality, unstable rocks, and very narrow spaces. He emphasized that the decision to stop entering the cave was based on a risk analysis, as the chance of survival was too low to justify the danger to the rescuers. Thai lead rescuer Kengkad Bongkawong agreed and prohibited further entry because of these critical safety risks.

救援專家現決定從積極救援轉為被動支援。馬來西亞專家 Lee Kian Lie 將此次任務形容為極其危險的行動,原因在於空氣品質不佳、岩石不穩定且空間非常狹窄。他強調,決定停止進入山洞是基於風險分析,因為生存機率太低,不值得讓救援人員冒險。泰國首席救援員 Kengkad Bongkawong 亦表示同意,並因這些關鍵的安全風險而禁止繼續進入。

Weather conditions have also made recovery efforts very difficult. Forecasts predict more rain, which has already reduced the available headspace in the cave to only 30 centimeters. Consequently, the team has shifted its focus to managing water from the outside by pumping out caverns and digging drainage points. As a final measure, survival food has been placed at various points inside the cave to help the missing persons if they manage to get out by themselves.

天氣狀況也使搜救工作非常困難。預測將有更多降雨,目前山洞內可用的頂部空間已減少至僅 30 公分。因此,救援隊已將重心轉移至從外部管理水源,包括抽乾洞穴及挖掘排水點。作為最後措施,救援隊在山洞內不同位置放置了生存食物,以幫助失蹤人員若能自行脫困時使用。

Conclusion

The search has been officially suspended, and current efforts are limited to reducing the water levels from the outside.

搜救行動已正式暫停,目前的努力僅限於從外部降低水位。

⚡ The 'Precision Leap': Moving from Basic to Specific

At the A2 level, you likely use words like bad, hard, or small. To reach B2, you must replace these 'umbrella words' with precise descriptors. Look at how this text describes a disaster—it doesn't just say the cave was "dangerous"; it explains why using high-impact vocabulary.

🔍 The Vocabulary Shift

A2 Logic (Simple)B2 Logic (Precise)Context from Text
Very small spaceNarrow spaces"...and very narrow spaces."
Not safeUnstable"...unstable rocks..."
Hard / DifficultCritical"...these critical safety risks."
A small amount of spaceHeadspace"...reduced the available headspace..."

🛠️ The "Cause & Effect" Connector

Notice the word "Consequently".

  • A2 style: "It rained a lot. So, the team changed the plan."
  • B2 style: "Forecasts predict more rain... Consequently, the team has shifted its focus..."

Why this matters: B2 speakers don't just list facts; they link them. Consequently tells the listener that the second action is a direct result of the first. It transforms a simple sentence into a professional observation.

💡 Pro Tip: The Passive Shift

Look at the phrase: "The search has been officially suspended."

Instead of saying "The teams stopped the search," the author focuses on the search itself. This is called the Passive Voice. Using this allows you to sound more objective and formal, which is a requirement for B2 English exams and business environments.
