On June 7, 2026, a Russian Shahed drone hit a fuel building at the Chornobyl spent fuel storage site. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the operator Energoatom emphasized that radiation levels stayed safe and no spent fuel was in the building during the attack. However, the strike caused a fire and damaged the structure. This event follows other risks to nuclear sites, such as a February 2025 attack on the New Safe Confinement dome and ongoing arguments over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, where a UN-led ceasefire recently helped restore a power line.

At the same time, Ukrainian forces carried out large aerial attacks inside Russia. These strikes targeted naval bases in Kronstadt and Lomonosov, as well as oil terminals in St. Petersburg, during an international economic forum. Because of these attacks, Governor Alexander Beglov told residents to stay indoors for their safety. Russian officials stated that they stopped hundreds of drones near Moscow and Leningrad, whereas Ukrainian sources claimed the drones flew about 1,000 kilometers to hit their targets.

The main goal of this meeting was to get better air defense systems because Ukraine currently lacks enough interceptor missiles. This effort took place after the Kremlin rejected President Zelenskyy's request for a direct meeting with President Vladimir Putin to discuss a ceasefire.
