The Indian government has increased the price of domestic LPG cylinders because the cost of buying fuel from international markets has risen due to instability in West Asia.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has raised the price of a 14.2 kg cylinder by ₹29. This is the second increase since March, following a previous rise of ₹60. These changes were caused by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which led to a 46% increase in the Saudi Contract Price between February and June. As a result, the actual cost of a cylinder has risen above ₹1,600. To handle this, government oil companies are absorbing about ₹700 in losses per cylinder. To reduce these risks, the government has started buying fuel from North America and North Africa and has increased domestic production by over 60%.

There are different opinions regarding these price hikes. The ministry emphasized that Indian consumers still pay much less than people in neighboring countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh. Furthermore, those in the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme only pay an effective price of ₹642 per cylinder through government transfers. However, political opponents and consumer groups argue that these increases are unfair. They claim the government did not lower prices when global oil costs were low, and that inflation is now hurting middle- and lower-income families.

Additionally, there is a difference between domestic and commercial pricing. Commercial cylinders change price every month based on global markets and have reached ₹3,113.50 for a 19 kg cylinder in Delhi. To prevent subsidized domestic fuel from being sold illegally to businesses, the government has introduced a verification system using One-Time Passwords (OTP).
