The Nigerian military has announced that several hundred civilians have been rescued after being held by Boko Haram militants in the Mandara Mountains of Borno State.

The rescue operation targeted a militant base in the southern part of Borno State. According to Lt-Col Haruna M Sani, the military used a strategy based on intelligence and psychological tactics to create instability among the insurgents before attacking. However, there is a disagreement over the numbers; while the military says 360 people were freed, the Borno South Youth Initiative claims that 416 people were released through negotiation. Consequently, it remains unclear whether the result was due to military action or diplomatic agreements.

This region has suffered from a long-term insurgency started by Boko Haram in 2009. The group often kidnaps civilians from schools and religious sites to demand ransom payments. SBM Intelligence reports that these activities earned approximately $1.66 million between July 2024 and June 2025. Although the Nigerian government officially forbids paying ransoms, analysts suggest that these payments are still made by private individuals or state actors, which encourages more kidnappings.

To improve security, Nigeria has increased its cooperation with the United States. Recent joint operations led to the death of 175 ISWAP fighters and a senior leader, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki. Despite these successes, the security situation remains unstable. The United Nations has noted that millions of people are still displaced due to the combined threats of terrorist groups and organized kidnapping gangs.
