The Introduction of Autonomous Ride-Hailing Services in London

倫敦推出自動駕駛叫車服務

Introduction

Uber and the AI company Wayve are preparing to launch self-driving taxi services in London. This project represents the first time Wayve's technology will be used for commercial purposes.

Uber 與 AI 公司 Wayve 正準備在倫敦推出自動駕駛計程車服務。此項目代表 Wayve 的技術首次被用於商業用途。

Main Body

The launch of Wayve's robotaxi system is expected to begin in the next few months, provided they receive official government approval. Through a partnership with Uber, these autonomous vehicles will be added to the UberX, Comfort, and Electric service levels. To ensure safety during the first stage, human supervisors will remain in the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUVs. Unlike Waymo, which uses 3D mapping and lidar, Wayve uses an AI system based on neural networks, using six cameras and radar to learn how to drive by analyzing video and data.

London was chosen as the main testing site because its narrow, old streets and frequent roadworks make it a challenging environment. Wayve plans to use the data collected in London to expand into more than ten other global cities, such as Tokyo. Meanwhile, Waymo is testing about 100 Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in a specific area of the city, with a public launch expected by the end of 2026.

倫敦被選為主要測試地點,是因為其狹窄且古老的街道以及頻繁的路面工程,使其成為一個具有挑戰性的環境。Wayve 計劃利用在倫敦收集的數據,擴展到包括東京在內等十個以上的全球城市。與此同時,Waymo 在市內特定區域測試約 100 輛 Jaguar I-Pace 車輛,預計 2026 年底對公眾開放。

Responses to this technology have been mixed. The UK government supports the move, and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized that the partnership will improve road safety and encourage economic growth. However, some human drivers have organized small protests. Uber management asserted that self-driving cars will support human drivers rather than replace them, as humans are still needed for difficult routes and bad weather. Furthermore, the legal rules are still being finished, and the Automated Vehicles Act of 2024 will not be fully active until late 2027.

對這項技術的反應褒貶不一。英國政府支持此舉,交通大臣 Heidi Alexander 強調,這次合作將提高道路安全並鼓勵經濟增長。然而,部分人類駕駛員組織了小型抗議。Uber 管理層聲稱,自動駕駛車將支援而非取代人類駕駛員,因為在困難路段和惡劣天氣下仍需要人類。此外,法律規範仍在完善中,2024 年的《自動駕駛車輛法案》將在 2027 年底前不會全面生效。

Conclusion

Self-driving taxis are moving from the testing phase to public use in London, where Wayve and Waymo are competing while following new UK regulations.

Vocabulary Learning

🚀 Moving Beyond "But"

At the A2 level, we usually connect opposite ideas with "but". While correct, using it too often sounds repetitive. To reach B2, you need to use Contrast Connectors that change the rhythm of your sentences.

Look at how the article shifts from positive to negative ideas:

"The UK government supports the move... However, some human drivers have organized small protests."

🛠 The "However" Upgrade

However is the professional cousin of "but."

  • The Rule: Unlike "but," which sits in the middle of a sentence, However usually starts a new sentence to create a strong pause.
  • Structure: [Sentence 1]. However, [Sentence 2].
  • Example: The cars are fast. However, they are expensive.

🧩 The "Rather Than" Logic

B2 speakers don't just say "not A, but B." They use phrases like "rather than" to show a clear preference or a correction of a misconception.

*"...self-driving cars will support human drivers rather than replace them..."

Why this is a B2 move: It allows you to compare two possibilities in one smooth motion without needing two separate sentences.

  • A2 style: They will not replace drivers. They will help them.
  • B2 style: They will help drivers rather than replace them.

📈 The Power of "Provided (that)"

Stop using "if" for every condition. When a specific requirement must be met for something to happen, use "provided (that)".

"...expected to begin in the next few months, provided they receive official government approval."

Quick Guide:

  • If = General possibility.
  • Provided that = "Only if this one specific thing happens first."

Compare:

  • If it rains, I will stay home. (Simple condition)
  • I will go to the party, provided that I finish my work. (Strict requirement)
